If you are looking for an all-round wonderful family dog, you can't come much closer to perfection than with the Cairn Terrier. These hardy little terriers with the pixie-like expressions on their faces are wonderful with children, intelligent, very affectionate, and even make good guard dogs. As terriers go, this breed is remarkably easy to obedience train, and can be housebroken within days with a little effort and perseverance. 

Originally from Scotland, the Cairn Terrier was used to control vermin populations and to hunt Fox, Otter and Badgers. The Cairn's short legs and compact, yet athletic body allowed it to go underground after it's quarry and wriggle between rocks and crannies in pursuit of it's prey. In Scotland, Cairns are still used to work with hounds. Cairns stand just 10 to 12 inches high and weigh between 13 and 16 pounds. They have a thick, harsh outer coat and a short, close undercoat that requires occasional professional clipping. Cairn colors range from cream and wheaten to red, gray and almost black. The coat is tough and waterproof to withstand Scotland's harsh weather conditions.

Cairn Terriers, by nature, are very upbeat, happy and fearless little creatures. They have plenty of energy, and love to keep their humans company whether on an afternoon stroll, a car ride, or a run through the park. They thrive on adventure and love to dig, so some care needs to be taken to ensure they don't dig up trouble!
